One by one, three women find themselves in a space not of their choosing–in a loop that they can’t control. As they relive their stories over and over again, they begin to question where and who they are. Through their questioning, they begin to realize the truth about their existence and are determined to break the cycle.

“This Is Not A True Story” is a new play reckoning with the problematic history and impact of Madame Butterfly, Miss Saigon, and Kumiko the Treasure Hunter. The play imagines a world where the heroines of these stories have a say in their telling, have choice, have agency, have a chance at changing their ill-fated endings. One by one, three women find themselves in a space not of their choosing–in a loop that they can’t control.
